Hi Diane,

From James Laver's "Costume and Fashion", 1995 edition:
Greek costume was essentially drapery, a large rectangle of wool or linen being adjusted in various ways and held in place by one or two girdles, and by [one or two] fibulae at the point of the shoulders.

So I would go with a toga, but demonstrate different ways to drape it. Also, they weren't all white; lower status people sometimes wore brown (though it was frowned upon) and it is understood that upper classes wore red, yellow, purple and green at least.

Subject: Ancient Greek - costumes for kids

Hi

We’re just creating an Ancient Greek session and, if it seems popular, we’d like to get basic costume for the classes.  The Ancient Greek expert who’s been working on our collection has told me that it’s not togas but I’m figuring classes won’t mind too much if I just do something like this:   http://www.ehow.com/how_10012875_yourself-greek-togas-kids.html   But does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks

Diane
