Thanks Neil
That's very helpful. It sounds similar to the process we would follow with new members of staff.

Subject: RE: [CIG-E-FORUM] Final session - workloads/workflows & summing up - post-training review period

Hi Helen,

We have 10 cataloguing assistants in our team so basically 4 senior cataloguers and I took 2 assistants each to check their original cataloguing work. This was not too onerous as we derive the bulk of our records from external databases. However, what we did find was that inevitably fresh questions arose from some of this checking. Our RDA Working Group has continued to meet monthly to make further decisions and also to tweak our in-house documentation. Thankfully it is now reaching the stage where cataloguing assistants only need to bring examples of things they are not sure about. We are cataloguing all sorts of material of course (postcards, posters, multimedia packs, DVDs, Audio CDs, CD-ROMs, as well as books) but the team has adapted well to thinking about how to catalogue such a wide variety of material in RDA.

Best wishes,
Neil

Hi Neil
I wondered if you'd be able to say a bit more about how you've done your post-training review period, as that's something we'll need to do and I haven't considered much as yet.
Thanks
Helen

There is no doubt productivity was affected during an intensive period of training for our cataloguers throughout the months of September and October, plus the amount of time planning the training by our RDA Working Group. We have also had a review period post-training to check the original RDA cataloguing undertaken by our cataloguers. We are still trying to catch up!

With the use of templates for different types of material I don't think it does take much longer to catalogue in RDA than in AACR2. On the other hand, and this only affects our senior cataloguers, NACO/SACO authority work in RDA now takes a bit more time with the amount of detail one can include in an authority heading (in addition to the change in the rule of three).

At the British Library we suspended output targets during the training and implementation period. However, in the event, our normal targets were met as a result of the mitigation strategies we put in place. Certain types of material were front loaded for cataloguing whilst others were outsourced.

We have found that RDA has had little impact on descriptive cataloguing in terms of outputs. However, the proportion of time spent on creating authority records has increased as a result of there no longer being a rule of three. This is particularly noticeable in terms of grey literature and conference material.

Good afternoon everyone,

Thanks to everyone for the discussion this morning. We hope everyone's finding the discussion interesting. If you're just catching up, it's fine to continue any discussion points from then or anything else that has come to mind. As ever, if you're changing the topic, please change the subject line.

This afternoon we're starting off by considering workloads/productivity?

Has adopting RDA had an impact on your productivity? If so, has this lessened as you go further? For those of you still planning, is this a major concern you have or are you just accepting it?

Katrina
