Bioinformatics Scientist – Hertfordshire – Stevenage – St. Albans – Hatfield – London – Biotechnology – Bioinformatician – Genomics – NGS – Next Generation Sequencing

 

We are currently representing a well-established organisation seeking an experienced, highly motivated and science-driven Bioinformatics Scientist/Bioinformatician to join the growing biotechnology unit.

 

The group have a comprehensive portfolio and their research focus includes genetics, biochemistry, functional genomics and proteomics, including cell biology and structural biology. Many projects involve collaboration with institutes and universities in the UK and worldwide, making this role much more exciting and it will allow you to gain great exposure and experience across many areas.

 

Role and Responsibilities:

·         Take a leading role in projects that are aimed at the in-depth annotation and refinement of the genome sequence

·         Developing and implementing strategies for genome sequence annotation through the identification of individual genes and metabolic pathways

·         Engaging in on-going refinement of the sequence assemblies generated through combination of Illumina, Sanger and 454 sequence data using a variety of applications

·         Participating in the build and maintenance the genome database, while working towards the continuous improvement of the bioinformatics capacity within the organisation

·         Communicating accurately with other researchers and colleagues, so they can fully engage with their data and develop core skills in bioinformatics

·         Providing support to other projects as required

Experience and Education required:

      A Masters degree or above in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Genetics or Plant Science, together with a background in plant genomics and a good understanding of basic plant breeding concepts used in commercially important crops

      Proven research experience in bioinformatics and analyses of genome data, specifically with large genomic and transcriptomic datasets (NGS, RNA seq data etc)

      Good scripting and programming skills in one or more of the following: R, Perl, Python, Java

      Familiarity with Linux/Unix systems

      Excellent organisational and communication skills are essential and eligibility to work in the UK is vital

The salary on offer for the role is between £31-36,000 depending on experience, plus a great pension scheme.
