Subject: ATIG Call for Tourism Papers and Panels, American Anthropological Association 2014 Washington, DC

Anthropology of Tourism Interest Group

(of the American Anthropological Association)

2014 marks the 40th anniversary of the first panel explicitly dedicated to tourism at the American Anthropological Association, as well as the first year in which the Anthropology of Tourism Interest Group (ATIG) will sponsor sessions.  Currently the ATIG can anticipate that there will be at least two single session panels in the program guide with the AT interest group designation.  ATIG is requesting the AAA EC to grant additional sessions given the historical circumstances of the 2014 meetings.  It must be emphasized that these are not officially considered nor carry the title of invited session. Nonetheless, these two panels are allocated by the Board as the ATIG panels and thus are guaranteed participation in the program.  The ATIG Board has determined that these panels be created under two different processes. One is a Selected Papers Panel, the other is a Designated Panel.

These two panels are essentially equivalent to sessions created by a section program committee based on individually submitted papers and a session modeled on the invited session process of AAA sections.

Selected Papers Panel on “Structuring and Shaping Tourism”

Call for papers: We seek individual papers that address how factors “outside” of tourism, that is, what is typically or often conceptualized as tourism per se, contribute to shaping and indeed structuring tourism. These can include, but are not limited to, sociological, institutional, governmental, historical, media, technological, climatological, or economic factors, or their combination, that shape and structure tourism from the “outside”. Typically studies of tourism implicitly or explicitly define tourism as directly tied to tourist activities, practices, cultures, experiences or other attributes. When they do consider such outside factors, they are often couched in terms of “impacts” or considered as part of the socio-cultural or historical “contexts,” or conditions, rather than seen as important dynamics that vitally determine and shape the structure of tourism. The exact tittle and abstract is crafted based on the selected papers for this panel.”

Submission Process: Please submit your paper abstract, following the AAA guidelines for formatting but also including your email address, by January 25 to Michael DiGiovine, ATIG Program Chair, [log in to unmask] with cc to [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] .  Send as a word file attachment with your name, year, and ATIG paper proposal in the filename.

Review of Submissions: Based on the submission the Program Committee will determine a selection of five papers to form a session with a discussant (that they designate) and a discussion period.  Papers that are not selected will be grouped together in a suggested panel and the authors will be put into contact with each other so that they may decide on their own whether or not to organize a panel together.  Determinations are made in the first week of February in order to provide individuals the opportunity to find other co‑panelists or other sections venues in case their paper is not selected for the panel. It is anticipated but not confirmed that two sessions may be formed based on papers individually submitted to ATIG.

Designated Panel

The ATIG calls for members to develop ideas for and to be the organizer of an ATIG Designated Panel that contribute to theoretical and analytical innovations or that highlights the 40th anniversary of the first AAA session dedicated to tourism.  Only single session panels are considered.  Although ATIG is requesting additional session slots from the AAA Executive Committee, it is not guaranteed that an additional allocation will be made.  Note also that the title ATIG Designated Panel is symbolically equivalent to a section’s “invited session” however interest groups cannot formally be granted the capacity to create such panels.

Call for papers:  the ATIG Program Committee will review proposals for the designated panel beginning December 10. Please submit a title, abstract, and list of prospective panelists, including potential titles, any indications of commitment of panelists (if possible),  following the AAA guidelines for formatting but also including your email address in the file, by January 25 to Michael DiGiovine, ATIG Program Chair,[log in to unmask] with cc to [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] .  Send as a word file attachment with your name, year and ATIG panel proposal in the filename.

Review of Submissions: Based on the submission the Program Committee will make a determination in the first week of February in order to provide individuals the opportunity to find other co‑panelists or other sections venues.  ATIG will recommend panel proposals that are not selected to appropriate sections for consideration as an invited session.
