As it happens, yesterday I revisited that Graphene Centre job advert, and noticed the requirement for a “first class degree” in addition to a PhD. I therefore take back what I wrote before about the value of PhDs in nanotechnology PR. The candidate profile is clearly no more than a means of arbitrarily whittling down a potentially large volume of applications into something more easily manageable.

Despite my considerable experience in nanomaterials journalism, with my 2.1 physics degree I’m ineligible to apply for the Cambridge job.
