Hi all

Having been asked to speak at a Westminster Employment Forum event on the Health at Work Assessment and Advisory Service (now becoming known at the Health and Work Service) recently, I made a Freedom of Information Request to the NMC on OH Nurse numbers and thought you might be interested in the answer, which I have received today.

I write in response to your Freedom of Information Act (FoIA) request, received by our office on 15 November 2013, for the following:

"Can you please tell me a) How many nurses are on Part 3 of the Register? b) How many occupational health nurses are registered in the UK with a qualification of OHNC or above?"

In response to question a, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) only has one level of Occupational Health Nurses. As of 3rd December, the NMC has a total of 3, 489 [ROH] Registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse – OH on the Register. If by OHNC you are referring to an employment title, the NMC does not collect this information, and therefore cannot provide it.

In answer to question b, I have provided the following breakdown:

England:

Nurse and SCPHN – 21, 312

Nurse, Midwife and SCPHN – 414

Scotland:

Nurse and SCPHN – 2, 489

Nurse, Midwife and SCPHN – 34

Wales:

Nurse and SCPHN – 1, 194

Nurse, Midwife and SCPHN – 25

Northern Ireland:

Nurse and SCPHN – 985

Nurse, Midwife and SCPHN – 9

EU:

Nurse and SCPHN – 310

Nurse, Midwife and SCPHN - 6

I asked the question mindful of the 250 – 740 or so healthcare professionals – presumably with some knowledge and experience of occupational health that the service might require.  I think their first answer, answers both questions and the information they have given me in response to Question b is the number of specialist practitioners overall but I will be checking.

Thanks

Lindsey
