medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

I couldn’t find anything specific on Accidie/depression but in her list she actually calls it Tristia, doesn’t she?

We really need her on board with this!

Hello All

As Maddy will tell you, Dr Miriam Gill is the leading expert on depictions of Deadly Sins and Corporeal Works in wall paining.  Here is a link to her website which discusses some of the iconography:

The sin of Accedia isn't so much 'Sloth', is it, but what we'd call depression and/or despair. The devil's job is to persuade the individual to lose all hope, including of salvation, and allow themselves to lapse into the inaction characteristic of depression (don't we know it), hence the somewhat misleading translation as Sloth. Which is, of course, why suicide was thought of as a sin.

Despair is also one of the things you were advised to look out for on your deathbed.

In Sequitur de Accidia in the Parson’s Tale, Chaucer references, within three pages, Accidie, “slouthe” and wanhope, “that is despeir of the mercy of god”.  I’m wondering if there is a semantic or other merge of association here which might also be present in the wall painting.

In Prudentius' Psychomachia, such a suicide is associated with anger, but by the 12th and 13th centuries, it was more commonly associated with despair.  It is not, to my knowledge, usual to associate it with accidia.
Cheers,
Jim

In the BBC clip of the St. Cadoc wall paintings there’s a brief glimpse of “Accidia,” which shows a man running himself through with a sword.  I know suicide was associated with accidia, but is this a typical iconography of Sloth?

Probably not - the St Teilo's paintings are iconographically completely different, and a different artistic style as well, and probably 1520s rather than 1480s.

Main connection is probably that I've worked on both!

I wonder if there is any connection between these wall paintings, and those found at St Teilo, formerly at Landeilo Tal y bont, Glamorgan, and now at St Fagans

The church has nave and a substantial south aisle with south chapel at the east end. The St George is most of the south wall, the Sins go round the west end of the south wall and onto the west wall. There is clearly undamaged paint under the limewash on the west wall of the aisle north of the window and round to the north wall of the aisle - current best guess is the Acts of Mercy. There are traces of paint elsewhere including over the chancel arch, but Jane Rutherfoord says the smooth plaster elsewhere suggests it has been renewed in the post-medieval period and won't have any paint.

There are also post-medieval texts (you can see part of one which has been left over the castle and princess in the St George painting) which may make it difficult to justify exploring further.

Very curious as to the extent of them. The video suggests one end of one aisle has its paint scheme intact, a rare opportunity to get some sense of the original appearance of the whole church. Wonderful.
