Some of the crosses look like pilgrim crosses to me, ie crosses carved by pilgrims on route to shrines eg Walsingham.

In the winter 2013
edition of the SPAB’s magazine there’s an article on graffiti on lead
roofs. Mostly post-medieval, but many have medieval
connections

stills, or a way of slowing them down?
