Abstract: Since the success of Barack Obama’s ‘my BO’ campaign on Facebook during the 2008 US presidential campaign, there has been considerable scholarly interest in the ways in which politicians and political parties are now using social media as the new, must-have tool in their election campaign repertoire. This presentation is based on a study which took place during the final four weeks of New Zealand’s general election in 2011 which analysed the Facebook posts of 26 New Zealand MPs, exploring their content, form and function, together with examining some of the public comments generated by those posts and the ‘reach’ of posts in terms of the ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ associated with each one. Preliminary findings suggest that sex, Party and attitudes towards social media all influenceFacebook behaviour although in general, politicians use Facebook in mostly rather pedestrian ways.
