Aiming High – Valuing Challenge in Teaching and Learning

Sheffield Hallam University’s Learning and Teaching Conference will take place on Thursday 19th June 2014. The conference theme of ‘Aiming High – Valuing Challenge in Teaching and Learning’ creates an opportunity to explore how teaching and learning thrive by setting high expectations. 

We invite proposals from academic practitioners, support and development staff, and from students for presentations, workshops and posters.

The one day conference will be organised around broad topics, which are outlined here to encourage a range of high quality submissions:

Academic innovation: creativity and innovation; currency and scholarship; academic peer support; excellent teaching in the lecture theatre; evaluating innovation; creative spaces for teaching; inspiring through assessment and feedback; valuing difference; excellent partnerships.

Inspiring and supporting students: staff-student interaction and collaboration; active learning; keeping students on task; renegotiating engagement; supporting excellent teaching; skill or literacy; communities of practice.

Fostering independence and peer support: student belonging; student transition; communities of practice; embracing diversity and challenge.

Technology changing the learning landscape: technology supported innovation; increasing access; redefining the classroom; mobile learning; social media; making connections; on the cutting edge.

The students’ view: defining excellence; enhancing the curriculum through staff-student co-production; student researchers; student conferences; using my technology my way; peer co-operation; students as partners.

Call for Participation

We welcome submissions that address the theme of Aiming High.  We seek proposals for presentations based on evidence and experience of academic practice in any of the following formats: short papers, workshops, thunderstorm presentations and posters.   Please refer to the further information about the conference formats which is available from https://blogs.shu.ac.uk/ltconference/ and in the attached document.

How

We invite you to submit an abstract of up to 350 words using the attached form. Use a clear title and include the names of presenters with an indication of the corresponding author, the type or types of session being offered and a description of the offer. Submissions will be blind peer reviewed.

When

The closing date for submissions is Friday 31st January 2014. The peer review process will be completed by 28th February 2014.

 

Registration

Registration for the conference will open on the conference website (https://blogs.shu.ac.uk/ltconference/) in the coming weeks.

 

The conference will be free of charge to staff from Sheffield Hallam University.  A fee of £150 will apply to external delegates.  Payment details will be provided on the conference site.

 

Keynote Speaker  – Professor Norman Jackson

Biography
Professor Norman Jackson

Norman Jackson is Emeritus Professor at the University of Surrey and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In 2011 he founded the Lifewide Education Community, a not for profit social enterprise promoting and supporting the idea and practice of lifewide learning, education and personal development. These concepts were originally developed by the Surrey Centre for Excellence in Professional Training and Education (SCEPTrE) which he Directed between 2005-11. His meandering career in higher education led him from being a geology teacher/researcher to roles in policy, research, development and consultancy with a number of UK national bodies including Her Majesty’s Inspectorate, Higher Education Quality Council, Quality Assurance Agency, Learning and Teaching Support Network and Higher Education Academy.

 

Professional Recognition: Papers published at the Learning and Teaching Conference can be used as evidence of Continuing Professional Development by staff seeking to gain Fellowship of the HEA or to demonstrate maintenance of good standing. They are likely to map to UKPSF Professional Values 3 (Use of evidence informed approaches and the outcomes of research, scholarship and continuing professional development), Area of Activity 5 (Engage in Professional Development in subject/disciplines and their pedagogy, incorporating research, scholarship and evaluation of professional practice), and depending on the approach taken, can also support Core Knowledge 4 (the use and value of appropriate learning technologies) and 5 (evaluating the effectiveness of teaching).
