Apparently “County Archaeology Departments” subscribe to this website. So, the question is – do any of us? If not then surely the site is deliberately misleading people who use it?
The data within ARCHI has been sourced from a wide range of publications ranging from specialist books to the "mainstream" archaeological journals such as Britannia, Council for British Archaeology Reports etc. Additionally, data has been sourced from archaeological surveys published by various Local Historical / Archaeological Societies and Field Groups.

A small but increasing number of records are "personal communications" from field walkers. However, we only publish these findspots on our site if the finder is known to us and hence we can personally validate the source.
ARCHI has a worldwide reach. We have had subscriptions from British and American University Archaeology / History Departments, Schools, Archaeological Societies & Clubs, County Archaeology Departments, Archaeological Consultancies, Archaeology students and Hobbyists from Australia to Mexico.
Looking at some of the Durham data I would be highly surprised if it came from local journals, mainstream reports, or local archaeology societies – looks far more likely to have been lifted from our on-line database “Keys to the Past” (although I cannot of course prove that)

I've just had a look and used my home address for the search point – Whilst there's some obvious stuff, mined from fairly easily accessed sources (a lot of finds – from PAS?), there's also a load of rubbish there as well. Hopefully it is so poor that the M-D users ignore it ...

Hi all,
Today (having read an article in ‘The Searcher’ I discovered the existence of a website called ARCHI-UK. http://www.digital-documents.co.uk/ Has anyone else seen this?! Where is it getting its information? It says it used a long list of journals.
To quote, “The database was initially constructed to address the lack of easily available information relating to the distrubution of archaeological sites. This was particularly evident during my time as a student of archaeology at Birkbeck College, University of London, UK.”
Confused!
Presumably it’s mainly used by metal detectorists to find where they should detect, and they pay money to subscribe. You can’t see any details unless you subscribe…
The mind boggles.
