The Department of Education, Childhood and Inclusion
We specialise in courses with a focus on education, childhood, early years, youth work and inclusion. In addition, the internationally renowned and successful TESOL and Autism Centres are part of our provision.
One of the features of our courses is a strong emphasis on employability with excellent local placements and a growing number of opportunities overseas. Many of our part time courses have a professional work-based learning focus. Graduates go into a range of careers including teaching, mentoring, early years provision, children's social care services, playwork, youth work, international language teaching and voluntary sector organisations.
We offer post graduate courses in areas such as Education, Early Years Education, Autism and TESOL for home and international students. Our multi-professional team of lecturers are highly qualified, research-active, published experts in their field who come from many different backgrounds including teaching, early years, social work, health, counselling and psychology. We work closely with external partners, funders and stakeholders to ensure our qualifications are relevant and up to date and there are well developed links between our provision and the Department of Teacher Education.

The Autism Centre
The Autism Centre includes a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, on-site, distance and blended provision. Currently courses for professionals and others with an interest in the autism spectrum are available at all levels. A focus on conceptualisations of autism and the requirements of people on the autism spectrum currently forms the core of the offer but developments are planned leading to routes which embed autism studies within other areas of provision. The social model of disability and principles of emancipatory research underpin the driving ethos. Concerns about examining barriers to participation and engaging with disabled people in research that effects positive change are paramount, and the area already has an excellent reputation beyond the university for sound emancipatory practice. Staff are internationally renowned and in demand as consultants and research partners.
