Experiencing outdoor spaces: Multi-modal tourist travel and domestic inland waterways
Pine and Gilmore (2011) argue that memorable experiences are key to competitive advantage. They contest that successful companies operating in the experience economy must - amongst other things - engage the corporeal senses of their customers. However not all tourist experiences are 'produced' by tourism organisations. Whilst tourists engage with a variety of services during their holidays, they also experience the cultural and environmental settings of journeys and destinations. These environments form the focus of this PhD studentship, the focus relating to the experiences tourists have whilst in and moving through these spaces.

The spatial contexts for this studentship are inland waterways and their associated lands (tow paths and banks). Managed by the Canal and River Trust, there are 2,000 miles of inland waterways in England and Wales including over 2,700 listed structures, 50 scheduled ancient monuments and five UNESCO world heritage sites offering rich scope for study (Canal and River Trust, n.d.). Their value as a leisure resource is recognised and presently they support a range of uses, including boating, walking and cycling through rural and urban areas. Accordingly, this studentship aims to explore how leisure tourists experience waterways and associated lands using a variety of transport modes, whilst being 'on the move'.
The studentship is conceived as interdisciplinary and is likely to draw on a range of relevant academic literature from various fields, including tourist studies, sociology and geography, to provide conceptual depth. Key themes that might frame the successful applicant's research include:

  * The multi-sensory experiences of place, space and mobility
  * The production and experience of atmospheres
  * The temporal experience of the journey
  * The experience of rhythm, pace and flow
  * The formation of distinct forms of sociality and conviviality
  * The specificities of particular forms of mobility
This list is not exhaustive and the successful applicant will have freedom to develop their study according to their interests and as advised by the supervisory team. However, the study will be conducted using qualitative research methods.
The studentship is supervised by Dr Steven Rhoden (Director of Studies) and Dr Tim Edensor. The successful applicant will enrol initially on the Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) programme and progress, subject to successful transfer viva, at the end of year one to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme for the remaining two years of study. The studentship package includes tuition fees and a student support bursary.
