This report came out in the summer - will be even worse in UK by now, and particularly distressing as Christmas approaches. Some signs that Public Health England is engaging with this.

The Oxfam report argues ‘There is a need for informed debate about the presence of national-scale emergency food initiatives; the need for such interventions should be a cause for serious concern and the potential consequences, particularly the impact upon people suffering from food poverty, need urgent attention’.

Subject: FOR COMMENTS: Food Banks - how can PHE add value to local work
Dear Colleagues
When we met last Thursday Ann Marie mentioned that work would be starting looking at the impact of austerity particularly the issue of food poverty and food banks. The views of stakeholders are being sought on the scope and focus on this work. I have agreed to seek your views on where you think that PHE can add value to local work on food banks/ food poverty. Do please let me have your thoughts by December 20th.
Many thanks
Regards
Lola
