The service is part of the Corporate Centre, London, but is located within the Unilever UK HPC site in Port Sunlight, Wirral. The core team is comprised of four archivists and four support staff. UA runs an annual graduate training scheme for individuals seeking pre-course experience and has been highly successful in helping people gain entry on to the Liverpool and UCL courses. UA is responsible for the archives of Unilever's head office departments, divisions and operating companies in the UK and Ireland. Many of Unilever's subsidiary companies are over 100 years old and some much older, so the archives are very diverse. The collections are housed in a purpose-designed building which conforms to PD. The archive is also responsible for a large collection of artefacts, including packaging, works of art and awards, and maintains a small library that complements the archive collections. An oral history programme was established in 2003. Use of the collections is primarily internal, with the majority of requests originating from within the Corporate Centre and from the operating companies. External researchers are allowed access upon written application. UA has been awarded Designated Status by the Museums Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). The award "recognises the global significance of the company and its predecessor companies .... the comprehensive nature of the records in the Archive are considered to reflect Unilever's place in world trade". Designated Status demonstrates not only the pre-eminence of Unilever's collections and their international significance but also that they are stored and catalogued according to recognised international standards and cared for by qualified archivists. We were the first business archive within a company to have achieved Designated Status and join a select group that hold two Designation awards or more.
