Hi Sarah,

Apologies for the snappy response, I was about to leave the office for a meeting when your email caught my eye!

In short, our storage unit achieve an RH of 30-32% which apparently is pretty great for storing our growing film and tape based collections.

Temperature isn’t as much of a concern as RH though it’s best to keep the material in as cold an environment as possible which you seem to have.

One thing I’d advise against is taking in nitrate based film material which is highly volatile and can cause danger to your existing archive collections. If you would like more advice on that I’d be happy for my Technical Officer to contact you as has developed expertise in identifying nitrate from non-nitrate. We do not accept nitrate material and always encourage people to contact the BFI who have specialist cold storage for material of that nature.

Please feel free to contact me off list if you would like further input.

All the best,

Stacey

Subject: Guidance on storage conditions required for cinematic film

Dear List Members,

I am l looking for guidance about the storage conditions required for cinematic film.  We have been asked to take a film director's archive.  It contains film scripts and other paper records and reels of cinematic film from the 1970s onwards.  We only have an environmentally controlled room designed for rare books (temperature 15C and RH not exceeding 55%).

With regards to the film, what environmental conditions are required?

And is it suitable to be stored in an area designed for a valuable collection of rare books (I am wondering about the stability of film, e.g. is there a fire risk and under what conditions?).

I would be grateful for your help with this.

Thank you,

Sarah
