Call for Papers: The RAI Anthropology and Photography conference, British Museum, London, UK 29th-31st May 2014

Panel: Archiving Photographs and Photographing Archives: This panel encompasses subject matter, which details the experiences of turning photographs and other visual images into digital and hard copy archives and explores the ethics, impact and audiences of such archives.

Closing date for paper submissions 8th January 2014

LONG ABSTRACT

This panel invites papers that encompass subject matter which details the experiences of turning photographs and other visual images into digital and hard copy archives as well as the use of such archives in anthropological research and teaching. We welcome paper proposals from researchers in different stages of their career – those considering archiving their material, those just starting research as well as researchers that use archives as a starting point of their research to explore theoretical, ethical and practical issues surrounding photographic archives.

Papers could reflect on how we can better collect and organize material that might eventually become an archive. That would mean thinking about photographs as archives before fieldwork commences. Other papers might consider contemporary issues regarding how to work with digital images and how to digitise film. Papers might also consider issues of where to store visual images; how to store them; for whom are these images were taken; and how their purpose might change over time; as well as ethical concerns regarding the taking and use of images.
