Hi Keith
We use macs and have had a great deal of success with them. Their useful life has been in the 5-6 year range (for the workstations) which is very good for a high powered workstation.

The only thing I would consider is that your IT department may not be very accommodating to mac users (even if they say they offer support, it will probably be minimal). We have to do our own problem solving and sometimes face MS exchange issues and the occasional networking problem.

That being said I would still recommend their use for this kind of work. The are much more flexible and manageable when it comes to colour management and imaging related activities. I would guess that in our situation the overall TCO is about 20% higher than for a comparable high spec PC, but this is offset by the greater efficiency and application specific compatibility we see within our workflows and working environment.

Have a happy holiday
Tim

Hi Keith,

Echoing what john said about Mac's we have been using them here at the
National Museum for 10 or so years as well, we currently have G5 Mac's,
personally I think they are fantastic for imaging and I converted at home
also about 10 years ago and never looked back. As for monitors we are
using EIZO monitors for doing all our colour work and the apple monitor's
that we had have been set up next to the Ezios to let us have two screens
on the go, we donšt use the apple monitors for the colour processing work
but use them for other windows like the tools  pallets for photoshop and
for emails, spreadsheets etc

Our IT dept also did not offer any support to start with and now only
offer limited support but the macs are very easy to use and after you get
used to the initial differences they are fab.

Hope that helps
Cheers
Robin

We depend on Macs and have done for the last 10 years. With 2 g5 Power
macs  and a mac pro laptop for tethering blads & Nikons,  Time machine
is a superb back up facility Processing speed is faster than a pc, in my
opinion, and image software tends to be designed with the photog &
publishing in mind.
We initially had issues with our It Dept supporting the computers, not
that they need much support,  but they cam around to it - eventually! The
new power mac looks very quick, although the design does tend to mimic a
loo brush holder!

Good luck on your purchase

John

Hi All,

I have a question for the group?

Trying to gauge your thoughts as too your feeling with regards to using
PC or Macs when working with files/editing processing images etc.

At the moment I use a PC desktop in the office Dell precision with a Mac
monitor.

We might have some money to spend, so just wondering if any one out there
is using or has experience of higher spec equipment they might recommend
or not for that matter.
Ultimately I want to use what ever gives me processor speed along with
monitor image quality.

Regards

Keith Sweeney.
