Keith,

As other mentioned Macs, in general, are better specced than your average PC but this does not mean you cannot get a decent spec PC. Problems may occur with lower-end standard Pcs as they sometimes use “on-board” graphics cards with own branded drivers that get in your way when (for example) try to use dual monitors with different resolutions.

Much of it depends on the camera and the software you use:

Do you need Firewire (400/800) for tethering or USB? Maybe USB3

What software do you use for capture and editing/ processing? For example Capture One can use the GPU for rendering and processing, so a higher end graphics card is big a plus.

More (and faster) RAM helps with opening bigger files, or more files in Photoshop

An SSD as opposed to HDD will help reading and writing large images

Hope this helps

I recently bought a Mac mini with a Fusion drive which is easily the fastest machine I have ever had. The really neat thing is that it is smaller and lighter than a laptop so is easy to carry between home and office. I just bluetooth to mouse and keyboard and HDMI into a monitor at each place,

important..... we don't have an I.T department and the entire museum use
Dell, Apple is beyond our I.T capabilities! I think it's wise for
compatibility reasons to consider what your organisation generally uses
in terms of hardware and software. Depends on how good your I.T support
is I guess!

I don't like Dell myself; they use cheap components that have caused me
problems in the past, so I bypassed I.T support and had my editing and
studio P.C's custom made according to my spec by pcspecialist.co.uk.
They're very good machines. They're quite old now so I hope to replace
them in the next few years and I'll go back to P.C Specialist again! I
plan to get one for our Picture librarian too because the graphics card
in the dell she has been given is not up to snuff!

We depend on Macs and have done for the last 10 years. With 2 g5 Power
macs  and a mac pro laptop for tethering blads & Nikons,  Time machine
is a superb back up facility Processing speed is faster than a pc, in my
opinion, and image software tends to be designed with the photog &
publishing in mind.
We initially had issues with our It Dept supporting the computers, not
that they need much support,  but they cam around to it - eventually!
The new power mac looks very quick, although the design does tend to
mimic a loo brush holder!

Good luck on your purchase

Hi All,

I have a question for the group?

Trying to gauge your thoughts as too your feeling with regards to using
PC or Macs when working with files/editing processing images etc.

At the moment I use a PC desktop in the office Dell precision with a Mac
monitor.

We might have some money to spend, so just wondering if any one out
there is using or has experience of higher spec equipment they might
recommend or not for that matter.
Ultimately I want to use what ever gives me processor speed along with
monitor image quality.
