Dear Zooarch

A recent question from a colleague about how to carbon date deer antlers. Apparently the antlers from multiple specimens were found in a very good stratigraphic context, a destruction layer near an interior gate complex. Attempts to determine when this event occurred has thus far been a challenge because the C14 dates they have from other materials so far exhibit a fair range. Therefore, they want as many datum points as possible in this context. So, what are the uses and limitations of using antler fragments for C14 dating? Technical articles focusing on lab methodologies would be most welcome.

Thanks for your time and consideration on this topic.

  Have a great day.
