They describe different software. The VBM8-Manual describes processing via the VBM8 toolbox, whereas VBMclass10 describes using SPM8 itself. The VBM8 toolbox will give more sensitive results than using New Segment in SPM8 (although maybe not if SPM12 was used instead).
