Foodscapes Beyond the Alternative/Conventional Food Networks Binary (STS Conference, Graz, Austria, May 5-6, 2014).

Session organisers: Ulrich Ermann, Annalisa Colombino, Renate Renner, University of Graz.

This session aims to include papers that tackle from different theoretical perspectives all those spaces and practices of consumption/production that challenge the ‘traditional’ binary approach that analyses by dividing ‘food networks’ into ‘alternative food networks’ and ‘conventional food networks’ (cf. Goodman and Goodman 2009; Sonnino and Marsden 2006; Tregear 2011).

For this session, we invite contributions that offer a critical rethinking of this binary approach to food networks through the analysis of, for example, supermarkets, shops, shopping malls, farms, kitchens, living rooms, shopping bags and trolleys, restaurants, streets, new and traditional media, celebrity chefs, food blogs, food porn, creative and everyday cuisine, food quality, food safety, food mobility, healthy/unhealthy food, etc.. More broadly, we invite papers that consider, from a theoretical and/or empirical perspective, practices, spaces and discourses of food production, consumption, circulation and representation.
