Applications invited for 2014 joint PhD at University of Technology, Sydney UTS and University of Vienna.

The School of Design within the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at UTS welcomes applications in the area of Practice-informed Research (PiR) and announces a new PhD program.

PhD program in: Critical Spatial Thinking: Design and Performative Practice

The School of Design’s Interior and Spatial Program within the Faculty of DAB at UTS and the Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Studies at the University of Vienna invite applications to undertake a joint PhD (Co-tutelle) in the area of Critical Spatial Thinking: Design and Performative Practice, commencing early 2014.

This joint PhD program brings together candidates and leading academics from the UTS School of Design and the Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Studies at the University of Vienna in a transdisciplinary research cluster. The program leads to a joint PhD degree and is managed and taught at both universities. Working across the disciplines of spatial design, architecture, theatre, exhibition and media, the program engages existing design and artistic competencies and applies them directly to questions of Design and Performative Practice.

PhD proposals must relate to one or several of the program’s main research areas:

· Critical Practices: Performance, Design and the Politics of Space

· Sharing Space: Collaborative Practices in Curating, Design and Performance

· Staging the City: Performative Strategies and the Activation of Urban Space

Successful candidates spend periods of time at both universities. The current academic leads at the respective institutions are Prof Thea Brejzek and Prof Lawrence Wallen (UTS) and Prof Wolfgang Greisenegger and Prof Brigitte Marschall (Univ of Vienna).

Applications close on 15 December 2013. Tuition fees do not apply. Candidates wishing to be considered for an APA scholarship must submit the complete application, including a research proposal, to the UTS Graduate Research School by 15 November 2013.
