medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is an act of cultural vandalism on a par with blowing up a listed building or looting a bombed museum. Is there no legislation that could be stretched to declare this conduct illegal ? But it is no new crime. In my early days as a librarian (the 1960s) I was handling a mediaeval folio of Bartholomew the Englishman from which the individual miniatures had all been scissored out presumably to provide scraps to decorate a Victorian screen. At least with electronic sales it ought to be possible to trace the new owners...
