medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Brenda,

I agree.  It's charming.  It's David Burr's translation from his site at Virginia Tech: http://www.history.vt.edu/Burr/Sources.html

Specifically: http://www.history.vt.edu/Burr/Francis/Celano.html  (search "manger")

There he says "Anyone who wants to look at the sources included here (or for that matter use them in their classes) is welcome to do so."  I use it in my class, but he may want to have a say if it's to be published in a parish magazine.  However, the e-mail link to him there doesn't seem to work for me.  He's emeritus so perhaps he doesn't use it.  Here's his dept. home page with e-mail: http://www.history.vt.edu/Burr/default.html

Barring that, here's a link to an out-of-copyright 1908 translation (and there are more recent ones too):
http://books.google.com/books?id=ehexCy-T7DkC&printsec=frontcover&dq=thomas+of+celano&hl=en&sa=X&ei=_IGOUqHsDeLr2QWh44DoCw&ved=0CDYQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=manger&f=false

It's very stilted in comparison to Burr, but it's free.  Go to chapter XXX, para. 84.

Best,
John

Dear John,

What a lovely passage!

I edit my parish's magazine and I'm always looking for contibutions and this would be a treat for the December issue which is en train. Is this copyrighted anywhere ? And whose is the translation ? How should I cite it ?

Best,

Brenda,

What about this excerpt from Thomas of Celano's Life of St. Francis, where he describes Francis' devotion to the Christmas manger:
