italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
I will be chairing this panel at the AAIS conference in May

Psychiatry and Asylums. The History and Culture of Psychiatric Hospitals in Italy in the 20th Century

Organizer: John Foot, University of Bristol.
This panel looks to attract papers linked to the history and culture of psychiatry in Italy and the institution of the psychiatric hospital in the 20th century. I am interested in work which looks at individual asylums as well as doctors, patients and administrators. I would also be interested in research into the movement against the asylum system which began to take hold in Italy in the early 1960s and led directly to the so-called 'Basaglia Law' in 1978.
