AHRC funding opportunities for doctoral study in German at Bristol
The Department of German in the School of Modern Languages at Bristol invites applications from suitably qualified candidates wishing to engage in postgraduate study leading to the award of a PhD.
As a result of the success of the eight-member South, West and Wales Consortium bid to the AHRC, Bristol will share in £14.2 million funding for PGR studentships over the next five years. The first students on this scheme (which delivers postgraduate supervision, training and skills) will commence their courses in 2014/15. Successful applicants may be based solely in Bristol but have the opportunity to benefit from joint supervision from specialists in any of the consortium member institutions. Modern Languages has been allocated a number of these studentships. The formal application procedure ‘goes live’ in mid-December 2013; an Open Day for applicants will be held in Bristol on 22 January 2014; the closing date is 21 February 2014 and awards will be announced in mid-April 2014.

In the German department we offer the following:
Literature: a broad range of topics in German and Austrian literature from the late 18th century to the present day. The department has particular research strength across that period in poetry, women's writing, the literature of exile and migration, comparative literature and the relations of literature and music, and in literary responses to the Third Reich and the GDR.
History: German and Austrian history since 1800. The department has particular research strength in GDR history, memory studies, and the representation of history in literature.
Linguistics: Systemic and historical linguistics since 1500. The department has particular research strengths in the sociolinguistics of standardisation and of non-standard languages, the role of linguistics for school teaching, and the relationship between language and identity in past and present.
We keenly encourage collaborative and comparative work. In this context, applicants are pointed to the school-wide research interests on translating cultures, representations of war, historical sociolinguistics, and memory studies, amongst others.
