Dear David,

Thanks for the email and your planned module sounds great, just the thing I have introduced here at Leeds.

I attach the two module outlines that are most relevant: a module that allows 40 hr placements in local schools, and a module that demands collaborative research and public facing outputs. These don’t offer quite the 5-6 week placements you are planning, but should be useful as you think about learning outcomes, assessment types and describing the ways they influence employability.

I also attach a recent report completed on the ‘rhetoric’ of employability and recommendations for making sense of it within the curriculum, which may be of broader interest.

I’ve also got a few podcasts on History and Employability that you might have a scan of:

http://www.thehistoryfaculty.org/careers/item/169-history-and-employability-pt1

If you have a bit of resource for this kind of module development to pay for travel etc, I’d be happy to come down to Leicester to present / talk about these kinds of initiatives in more detail, and contribute to your module design ideas, if that sounds useful.

All the best,

Rafe

Subject: History in the workplace employability module

Dear colleagues,

I’m working with an academic member of staff within our History Department at De Montfort University, on running an employability module for 2nd year students.

Please see the request below from Dr David Dee about recommended reading lists, reports etc for this module.  I’d be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks

DMU – History in the Workplace

To all,

I am a History lecturer based at De Montfort University in Leicester and I am currently working to create a second year module entitled ‘History in the Workplace’.

The module is borne out of our Department’s desire to try and improve graduate employability rates. It is mainly based around a 6 week work placement (with associated assessed reflective exercises), yet I am also keen to hold contextual and practical sessions based on History and employability earlier on in the course.

I am writing to see whether you can recommend any useful books, journal articles, reports or websites that deal with the theme of History (or indeed Humanities) students and employability? I am currently putting a list of reading materials together, so any suggestions you may have will be most welcomed.

I have gathered some materials already, but am keen to offer our students a selection of reading around this area.

All the best,

Dr David Dee
