Paraprotein studies

We don’t either. The only caveat is that if a paraprotein band disappears in a myeloma patient on electrophoresis, we do immunofix to confirm disappearance as Ifix has greater sensitivity using our method.

We certainly don't. It would at least the double the turn around for known patients and would massively increase costs.

We occasionaly re-characterise but only if a new finding is suspected.

I have just had a rather odd conversation with a newly appointed haematologist who insists that every other Trust he has worked in has characterised paraproteins every time they are measured - i.e. repeating the immunofixation to confirm GAM kappa lambda etc.

We have always characterised it when first seen then just quantitated by densitometry on subsequent occasions. Is this not reasonable? Am I going mad? What do others do?

Mike
