“The worlds of Gwyn Thomas collided at Barry in a mayhem of carnival and character which was the bedrock of his writing and philosophy: Kiss me quick, Doctor Crippen's just around the next Cosy Corner! To be taught by Gwyn was a contradiction in terms which an Einstein could not unravel, but whose blessing of laughter bends has lit up my whole life.”   Dai Smith

To mark Gwyn Thomas’s centenary, join us for an evening celebrating the author’s connection with Barry.

Gwyn Thomas was one of Wales’s most prolific writers, broadcasters and public intellectuals. He once described his work as ‘Chekov with chips’, and his often darkly comic writing remains a vibrant insight into the lives and places of industrial south Wales.

Born in Cymmer, Porth, and educated at Oxford University, Gwyn Thomas moved to Barry in the 1940s and taught Spanish at Barry County Boys’ School for some twenty years. During this time he published over 12 novels and collections of short stories.

Both Dai Smith and Peter Stead were taught by Gwyn Thomas at Barry Boys, and their lively discussion will draw on their memories of him, as well as his writing.

Ymunwch â ni i nodi canmlwyddiant Gwyn Thomas gyda noson yn dathlu cysylltiad yr awdur â’r Barri.

Gwyn Thomas oedd  un o awduron, darlledwyr a deallusion cyhoeddus mwyaf toreithiog Cymru. Unwaith disgrifiodd ei waith fel ‘Chekov with chips’, ac mae ei weithiau tywyll comig yn parhau’n olwg cynhyrfus ar fywydau a lleoliadau de Cymru ddiwydiannol.

Ganwyd Gwyn Thomas yn y Cymer, Porth, a chafodd ei addysgu ym Mhrifysgol Rhydychen, cyn symud i’r Barri yn y 1940au, lle bu’n dysgu Sbaeneg yn Ysgol Sirol y Bechgyn y Barri am tuag ugain mlynedd. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn cyhoeddodd dros ddwsin o nofelau a chasgliadau o straeon byr.

Addysgwyd Dai Smith a Peter Stead ill dau gan Gwyn Thomas yn Ysgol Bechgyn y Barri, a bydd eu sgwrs fywiog yn tynnu ar eu hatgofion ohono, yn ogystal â’i weithiau ysgrifenedig.
