SCOTTISH CITIES KNOWLEDGE CENTRE - IDEAS FORUM
UNLOCKING URBAN LABOUR MARKETS - RESILIENCE AND RECOVERY, Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation, High School Yards, Edinburgh EH1 1LT, 25th Oct 2013, 10.30-15.45
This 'Ideas Forum' aims to assess whether and in what ways city labour markets have resilience to the economic crisis, and to understand why some urban labour markets are better able to withstand, recover or adapt in the face of the crisis than others in terms of:

  * City Size and Location, e.g. arising from depth and size of markets and infrastructure.
  * Housing, Neighbourhoods and Urban Form, e.g. role of collapsed housing market in labour market (mal)adjustment; opportunities to start businesses from home; social capital; local institutions and networks; quality of residential and business properties and locations; socio-economic segregation and edge city economic developments producing skills and spatial mismatches between workers and jobs.
  * Dynamism and Diversity, e.g. scale of response through migration and retraining; flexibility in labour market; opportunities for new entrepreneurial activity; transfer between firms and industries; diversity of workforce skills; nationality mix.
  * Institutions, Governance and Policy, e.g. training and enterprise initiatives; innovation at neighbourhood, city and firm levels; links between labour market institutions and employers.
