This issue also raises its head for scientists with a small but growing open science movement. Most projects share this type of information (if they are going to) on their project websites, but I’m not aware of any collective place you can find formative evaluation information. I’ve tended to share some of mine via by Tumblr but that’s been very ad hoc and is not dedicated specifically to sharing formative evaluation. Time is also, of course, an issue; perhaps particularly when you are trying to get a project up and running.

Agree that failings and problems are likely to be particularly difficult to share. I think it might be easier to establish a culture around sharing learning first.

I think there’s a culture issue isn’t there. Many people feel nervous about such a level of transparency for fear of their learning/problems/failings being dissected in public for all to see! If everyone did it then it would be easy, but few people are willing to go ‘over the top’ first!

Thanks Nigel (and the others who replied),

I subscribe to the RSS feed for Collective Memory. I think it has a good format and is aimed at pracitioners. Big ticks. Our company has contributed 5 reports.

The reason for my request is that whilst CM is good I can only see 14 entries in the last 206 days (that's how far back Feedly goes today). And of those 14 entries few seem to be from the better funded scicomm projects. I do like the CM format, but it does push you towards final summative evaluation reports, and it many contributors continue to upload long 50+ pp. word-processed academic style reports.

I was wondering if there were any projects (perhaps well-funded ones) that shared their learning as they went along?

Thanks

Shane

PS Apologies for raking over old ground. CM was mentioned in July in response to Mhairi's request for more evaluation sharing, but in fairness I don't think it does answer her wish list: https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=ind1307&L=psci-com&P=R28702&1=psci-com

Hi Shane,

This sort of discussion has been going on for years! As, no doubt, you’ll be unsurprised to hear!

Practitioners often say that there should be better sharing of evaluation reports, exactly as you say, to enable us all to learn from one another and to stop the wheel being reinvented.

A number of people from this list invested time and energy in creating this website which allows practitioners to share evaluations. (Apologies to others, as I think it was mentioned on here not that long ago.)

The website tries to encourage what you suggest a good evaluation report should do. To submit info you have to provide short bullet point summaries of what worked well and what you would do differently. Users can then download a detailed report if they want to find out more. But are people willing to publicise their evaluations and contribute to this sort of resource?

I’ll let you draw your own conclusions...!

Hello,

Sometimes I feel we lapse into writing evaluation reports for just for funders or perhaps even more commonly for ourselves. I know that we at I'm a Scientist fail to publish a lot of the knowledge we gain through the projects.

Does anyone have any examples of where projects have written evaluations that are easy for other practitioners to make use of and that are easy and simple to access ie. well written and well-published?

It's for blog post I'm writing so I will be sharing what I learn.

Many thanks,

Shane
