Dear all, other European countries report a huge impact when one of their
nationals flies in space, works on the International Space Station, has live transmissions and does experiments proposed by schools, etc. (I have not however seen formal reports or evaluation studies of this). For example, Luca Parmitano from Italy, Frank
de Winne Belgium and Andre Kuipers Netherlands. Tim Peake is due to fly in December 2015, so there’s time for this officer to plan a lot in collaboration with other STEM organisations. I saw Tim ‘in action’ with public and schools at the UK Space Conference
and he is a real asset.
Having two years to plan should also allow for designing some quality evaluation including tracking and impact.

Dear Louisa,
I must admit I don't know. Helen Sharman flew with the USSR who I imagine had their own comms/education plans at the time.
Tim Peake is the first British astronaut to fly with the European Space Agency and thus his education and comms plan falls partly within the remit of the UK Space Agency, as his
home member state, hence the post. Tim's flight should be a fantastic way to inspire more young people to become interested in STEM, hence the creation of this post.
Best wishes,
Hannah

Was a similar job ever created in support of Helen Sharman? Just wondering.
