Hi Simon,

Conversations with John Casey (UAL), the guys at Humbox (Kate Borthwick, Southampton), Elaine Garcia (Plymouth College of Art), and Coventry (David K help me out here....) might be useful for some discipline specific support and context. There are many others within the creative sector that would be able to help too- Falmouth for example.

Consider also talking to @alejandroa<https://twitter.com/alejandroa> from the Open Northampton project (he did get CLL support!) as Ale might be able to share his recent experiences with some of the issues you may be facing in resourcing and setting up an 'Open' institutional project.

Thanks

Alex.

Thanks Simon, David and everyone

Some really useful advice and the OER staff guide looks great, Simon.

It's even starting the conversation on openness that's the initial challenge here. I think it's partly tied up with this concept of creativity (Arts and Humanities) and ownership/copyright. Still, small beginnings.

Thanks Simon (and all),

I'd be interested to learn how you have integrated openness/OER into your strategies?
Is it adhered to?

Best wishes
Peter

Thank you David for pointing to Leeds Met - I would also suggest though that having an "Open Policy" is not necessary the best indicator.

We also have OER written into existing policy (e.g. Learning & Teaching Strategy & E-Learning Strategy). We have found that embedding "Open" into existing strategies and activities is generally more effective that having a separate "open" policy.

We also developed a staff guide to OER which has proven to be very popular amongst staff.

Hi there,

I just wanted to echo David's comment that looking at other institutions' support for open policies and practices would be a good place to start. I'd really like to do some case studies about how institutions have developed open policies from open practices but it's one of these things I never seem to be able to allocate time to! In addition to the institutions that David mentioned, it would also be worth having a look at what Nottingham are doing, and Glasgow Caledonian University also provide OER guidance through their institutional library.

Good luck with openljmu!

All the best
Lorna

Hi Simon/Jim

Would agree that senior manager support will be key. Would be worth looking at existing university "open" policies and processes, Creative Commons have an index of open policies (openly licensed, naturally :) ): http://wiki.creativecommons.org/OER_Policy_Registry - the UK ones (esp Leeds Met and Leeds) would be a good start.

But building up your own open practice and being able to speak first-hand about the benefits of openness would be your best (and most enjoyable) first step!

David

Hi Jim

I think this is great. I've been thinking of doing a similar thing here (OpenGoldsmith?). My only concern here is funding and time. There may be pockets of OER-ness here but I certainly haven't really come across any (other than a Coursera MOOC coming out of Computing, which is a different beast).

In the Goldsmiths context, I would try to get Senior Management support and funding to buy out my time and perhaps that of a 0.2 to help. Apart from the practicalities of OER production, use and resuse, I know I would need SM support to get my message across as it would require a huge culture shift towards openness. Risky, I know, as it might have the opposite effect!

If I had done a bit more planning, I should've applied for some consultancy days from the CLL funding.

Anyone else got some tips for me and Jim?

Cheers
Simon

Hi All
I've joined a lot of email forum in the past, but 'never in the field of email forum have I learnt some much, from some few emails blah blah . . .'

I've been thinking a lot about my own institution LJMU and have pulled together an idea to try to move this idea forward. I have no mandate to do this but here goes
What I would love is any comments/advice to help me get this going or not (depending on the advice)
