Dear all,
A few years ago I contacted both the NMC and RCN as my new employer was deciding what the nurses as a group should provide as our "title" on reports etc. OHNA? OHA? For those with OH qual or those without? I was told by both that you can choose whatever job title/ call yourself whatever you like so long as you don't misrepresent your qualifications i.e. you must not say you have a degree if you don't.
In fact the NMC representative didn't know there even were any OH qualifications until I put him right and directed him to educate himself about Part 3 of the Register!
Regards

Yet again the NMC may have demonstrated their lack of understanding of nurses roles and their complexity in today's working world........How much do they charge a year for this wonderful insight!!!!

I would really like to understand more Anne

NMC stance

Hi Anne,

This is interesting as it contradicts previous discussions on jismail. I recall the discussions stating that whatever the qualifications (or not) such titles of OHN/OHA/OHS could be used.

It would be very helpful if someone such as yourself could pick this up directly with the NMC and feedback to the jismail users.

I would appreciate the clarification.

Kind Regards

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] NMC stance

Dear List

I have heard from at least two nurses holding BSc/MSc level qualifications in occupational health, but not registered as a SCPHN, that representatives of the NMC have told them that they cannot  have any of the following terms in their job titles: Occupational Health Nurse/Occupational Health Adviser/Occupational Health Specialist. One who has several years of OH practice experience and in senior positions with a strategic remit, happens to be one of my current students. She is qualified in OH [BSc (Hons)],  has maintained CPD and has several years experience in senior posts. She has joined our programme with the intention of gaining SCPHN registration. She was told by the NMC that if she continues to practice in the OH setting and use one of the above titles before she becomes registered as a SCPHN  then “she will be investigated”  and action taken against her (!?)

I fully appreciate and endorse the need to have well qualified OHNs  and in order to protect themselves I would urge anyone working in OH to become qualified in the specialty.  However, I cannot understand why the NMC are taking this stance as although a nurse cannot claim to be RSCPHN I can see no reason why someone holding a specialist qualification in OH cannot term themselves OH nurse or any of the above as none of these are protected titles. If any subscriber has been given similar advice from the NMC I would be interested in hearing from them “off list”.  I suggested that she seeks clarification as to which standard she would be contravening, seek guidance from the RCN and if she is then feeling brave to call their bluff. The latter is easy for me to say as it is not my lively-hood which would be put at risk. Has anyone else told anything similar by the NMC?

Thanks
