Storytelling

This course is provided by the Welsh Government and is open to staff and volunteers working in museums, archives and libraries in Wales. It is suitable for those working with children, who facilitate activities and storytelling sessions.

Aim

To realise the value of how storytelling, reading and listening can help with a child’s development

To give the participant structure and ideas to form their own storytelling sessions

To build confidence in performing and practicing creative expression when telling stories

To take ownership of a story and capture the audience’s imagination

By the end of the course participants will have confidence in selecting suitable stories to form their own storytelling sessions and to be able to tell and read stories with self-assurance in their own working environment.

Preparation

Bring a wordless picture story book and a favourite children’s story book of your choice to the session. Think about when / where you first heard or told the story and how you felt about it. How might others feel about it?

Accreditation

Delegates may use this course towards Agored Cymru accreditation for YMCA Wales Community College unit GA32CY023 Using storytelling to stimulate the language development of babies and young children’. This will require follow-up work, including delivery of sessions for babies and children under five, and completion of a workbook.

Colette Chilcott – Colette is an experienced Teacher and manages learning support in libraries for both staff and the public.
