One reason we haven't introduced fines here is because people have out of hours access and could self-issue items. We felt that introducing fines might discourage people from self-issuing and would mean that we had no idea who had a missing item.

Now we have an RFID security system an alarm is triggered when people take an item without issuing it, so our premises are more secure and we've been thinking we might introduce a fines system as an incentive to people to return their books on time or renew them. We occasionally have the situation where someone keeps a book for 6 months or more without renewing or returning it to us.

We currently send an underdue (sent during the week before the item is due) and then overdues at weekly intervals. After at least 3 overdues have gone out, we usually contact the person by alternative means (different email address, by snail mail, by phone, etc) billing them for the replacement cost of the item + £10 admin fee. If that fails, we involve our Finance Department.

Hi Leanne
We were small and beautiful too. We gave three written warnings and then just issued an ultimatum asking them to pay the total book price. To be fair we had few transgressors, and occasionally ended up going to collect the books ourselves from far flung corners of Essex, but the threat usually worked and is possibly more manageable that a fine system ?

Best wishes from wet and windy Colchester.

Barbara

Hello,

We are a small but beautiful (in a brown and pink 1970's retro style) NHS library and currently we do not charge fines for overdue books.
I am considering implementing fines from 1/4/14 and I would be grateful for any hints and tips on how to make this process painless. I would also be interested in knowing if charging fines has reduced the amount of books that do not get returned or if you invoice more as fines have no effect. What made you decide on your current fine charges? If recently implemented- what opposition did you encounter?

Thanks ever so much,

Over and out (from a wind battered Norfolk)
