My recent ‘joy and fulfilment’ came when I received an email from a student who passed her nursing degree with distinction.  In her message she said she wouldn’t have achieved distinction if it wasn’t for my advice/input.

Initially I had thought that, whilst a lovely gesture, it was a bit over the top… then I remembered her second last appointment, which involved me informing her she had completely misinterpreted her reflective essay question.

Happy days.

Ronan the Librarian – that made me laugh out loud.  Thanks, Ronan.

Best,

Dickson.

Yep, I’ll go with Kim’s and Kal Winston’s replies.  Busy, busy busy, and the joy and fulfilment is probably similar for most of us: the pleasure in seeing ‘the penny drop’ for students; in hearing ‘now that we’ve discussed it, I can see what the lecturer meant’; in students dropping by to tell you how much their grade has improved because of their session(s) with you; and definitely in hearing ‘I wouldn’t have got through it if I hadn’t come to see you’.

‘No reply’ may be a popular option – as well as being busy, many share the same ‘obvious, innit’ joy, and feel no need for endless repetition. Perhaps?

I think at work, as others have mentioned, it’s great when you feel you’ve played a part in helping students overcome their anxieties regarding their work, and succeed in areas they were thinking they’d fail in...it’s also great working with students who are doing really interesting, creative work...generally I love the student contact time, but re. the number of ‘no replies’ it may not be that other people are lacking joy and fulfilment – they may just be very busy – as I am reading through a fascinating but at present rather convoluted Phd student’s thesis and trying to work out how it could be more coherently structured...

What nourishes and protects my 'soul' is finding now and again that there are people like Martin willing to undertake such reckless adventures – but I doubt there’s enough gin to encourage me to sing a song, read a poem. “On with the dance! let joy be unconfined; No sleep till morn” Lord Byron, The Eve of Waterloo. I’ll just eat the chocolate.

Don’t you wonder and worry about the people who won’t respond to Martin’s question – is it because nothing brings them joy and fulfilment at work? “the deep thunder, peal on peal afar; And near, the beat of the alarming drum” (Him again)

It might be very interesting, Martin, to see how many real (not chocolate & gin, even though it’s the best idea yet) responses you get from LDHEN, and how many nil-returns; it won’t be definitive but it might shine a wee light onto how joyful and fulfilled (or otherwise) we currently are.

I think it does, Katharine – not least because it means we get to know each other not just as colleagues but as real, whole people.

But having just seen Kim’s reply, I guess chocolate and gin could have the same effect! J

Hi Martin, we start each of our team meetings with a ‘Creative Moment’ (it’s a standing item on the agenda).

We take it in turns to read something inspirational or funny, sing a song, read a poem or whatever – and we do it to remind ourselves why education is important: because life is worth it.

In the middle of a really hectic schedule, it’s good to stop and make contact, collectively, with something which represents what we see as quality life. This may sound a bit cheesy – but it definitely protects my soul!

All good wishes

Dilly

Subject: joy and fulfilment!

Hello all. I'm writing a text provisionally entitled 'Joy and Fulfilment in Higher Education' (and subtitled 'A riposte to commercialisation's assault on the soul' if I can get my way!). What brings you joy and fulfilment at work? What nourishes and protects your 'soul' (whatever you take that to be, or not to be) when working?

(I will obviously ask individually for permission to use any observations.)

regards

Martin H.
