Subject: Rare Spanish plays on display

A new exhibition at Cambridge University Library features items from a recently purchased collection of 1,850 comedias sueltas ("loose plays") published in Spain between the mid-eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries. The display, curated by the Library's Hispanic Specialist, Sonia Morcillo, runs until Saturday 16th November and can be viewed during Library opening hours (9am-6pm Monday to Friday, 9am-4.30pm Saturday).

This new collection of sueltas contains works by major playwrights of the eighteenth century, re-workings of Golden Age classics, plays by authors of the canon, some translations and adaptations of European plays, and a number of plays by minor dramatists, whose works are very rare. Most of the sueltas are in Spanish, the majority belonging to the nineteenth century.
