The Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland has launched a programme to promote ageing research over the next three years. It will fund five top quality researchers to create the next generation of leaders in research on older people and ageing issues.
The CARDI Fellows will be post-doctoral researchers who will study a topic related to healthy ageing and take part in training and development activities to build up their independence and leadership.
“This is a very new and innovative move for CARDI. Up to now we have awarded grants for research projects and helped make research relevant to policy and practice,” said CARDI Co-Chair, Professor Davis Coakley. “Now we will select and nurture some of the most promising scholars to help them become future leaders in ageing research.
“This will help us to ensure that Ireland, north and south, can respond well to the challenges of a rapidly ageing population and ensure that the needs of older people are met in coming decades,” said Professor Coakley.
The CARDI Leadership Programme in Ageing Research is funded by the Health and Social Care Research and Development Division Northern Ireland and The Atlantic Philanthropies.

CARDI expects to fund one Fellow from the Republic of Ireland and up to four from Northern Ireland.
