You could try the Statesman's Yearbook, published annually since around 1870. It covers all the territories countries etc in the world and has lots of socio-econ-demographic info. The 1947 edition covers Northern Rhodesia pp.275 - 276 and gives 'revenue and expenditure of the colony for 6 years', with breakdown of revenue by customs duties, taxes, postal revenue etc etc, also gives import and export figures, and a breakdown by mineral commodity. E.g. in 1945 revenue from N R was £3,433,507, exoenditure was £2,543,370. Customs revenue was £696,831, licences and taxes yielded £2,235,386, postal revenue £104,725, fees etc £ 95,323..... Could be a lot of data trawling to get figures for all the UK's colonies, over several years, but there's a lot to gpo on in there. Dr Hillary J. I think Northern Rhodesia, with its copper, was an important wartime and post-war contributor but, try as I might, I can't work out how to verify this.
