3) Journal of Social and Political Psychology: CFP special issue on Social Psychology of Citizenship, Participation and Social Exclusion

Editor: Clifford Stevenson

Associate Editors: John Dixon, Nick Hopkins, Russell Luyt and Evanthia Lyons

Submissions are invited for a special section on "The Social Psychology of Citizenship, Participation and Social Exclusion".

Manuscripts can be theoretical articles, review articles, original research reports, replications and refinements, or commentaries. We are interested in submissions that examine the implications of various conceptualizations of citizenship for people’s everyday lives. This includes the study of how formal definitions of citizenship, as encoded and enforced by government policy, impact upon the perceptions and experiences of citizens and non-citizens; how the informal everyday regulation of the public sphere (such as public space or government services) affects the rights and entitlements of groups or individuals; and how different understandings of citizenship across gender, socioeconomic class and culture lead to different perceptions of what is worthwhile civic behaviour. In particular, we would welcome papers which consider the inclusive potential of concepts of citizenship in facilitating participation across the spectrum of political, civic and community life as well as

papers which consider the exclusive nature of citizenship in marginalizing, stigmatizing and denying rights and entitlements to individuals or groups. In addition, we encourage submissions that offer innovative views and/or identify how the psychological study of citizenship might be enriched by other perspectives, within and outside of academia.

The deadline for submission of articles is 15th May 2014 (although manuscripts may already be submitted earlier and will be reviewed on a rolling basis). All submissions may be made via the journal’s on-line system (http://jspp.psychopen.eu/author/submit/). The initial review and feedback process should be completed within three months and we aim to finalise the special section by the end of 2014. Informal inquiries concerning potential papers can be made to Clifford Stevenson (mailto:[log in to unmask] ).

4) Global Uprising Conference (Amsterdam)

http://roarmag.org/2013/10/global-uprisings-conference-amsterdam-balie/

This three-day event will bring together activists, journalists and scholars from the front-lines of the popular uprisings unfolding around the world.

GLOBAL UPRISINGS - The Stories, Ideas and Future of Uprisings around the World

De Balie, Amsterdam (The Netherlands)

November 15-17, 2013

The conference will open on Friday night with a keynote speech by the acclaimed British journalist Paul Mason, author of Why it’s Still Kicking off Everywhere. On Saturday and Sunday, we will have multiple discussion sessions with grassroots organizers about where today’s movements have come from and where they are headed; how people are organizing in the areas worst hit by the euro crisis; what happened to the revolutions in North Africa and the Middle East; how the Occupy Wall Street movement was organized; why Canadian and Chilean students decided to take to the streets; what animated the most recent popular uprisings in Turkey and Brazil, and much more.

The Global Uprisings Conference is organized by Brandon Jourdan (award-winning independent filmmaker) and Marianne Maeckelbergh (anthropologist at Leiden University in the Netherlands) of the Global Uprisings documentary film project. The event will be hosted by discussion center De Balie in Amsterdam and is made possible with the funding of the Foundation for Democracy and Media.

5) Conference: Alternative Futures And Popular Protest – Manchester Metropolitan University

http://www.hssr.mmu.ac.uk/politics-research-group/alternative-futures-conference/

From 1995 to 2013, Manchester Metropolitan University hosted a series of very successful annual international conferences on 'Alternative Futures And Popular Protest'.

We're very happy to announce that the Nineteenth AF&PP Conference will be held, between Monday 14th April and Wednesday 16th April 2014.

The Conference rubric remains as in previous years. The aim is to explore the dynamics of popular movements, along with the ideas which animate their activists and supporters and which contribute to shaping their fate. Given the significance of the mass movements in numbers of countries during the early years of this decade, we especially welcome papers discussing these – while no less welcoming suggestions on other topics.

Anyone interested in attending the conference should email Mike Tyldesley on [log in to unmask]

6) New Book ‘Negotiating Memories of Protest in Western Europe: The Case of Italy’ (Andrea Hajek; Palgrave MacMillan)

http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?pid=629157

Negotiating Memories of Protest in Western Europe explores the transmission of memories of European protest movements in the late 1960s and 1970s. Focusing on the specific case of Italy, the book examines the ways in which different memory agents negotiate memories of violence against left-wing activists, perpetrated by representatives of the state. It does so through a discussion of commemorative rituals, memory sites and other forms of 'memory work' performed by various social groups within the local setting of Bologna, where a left-wing student and protester was shot dead by police in 1977. By drawing on this fascinating case study, Andrea Hajek lays bare the dynamic relation between official and unofficial memories of conflict and and explores the challenges of historical research into social movements.
