We've doing exactly the same with Planet eStream; we've allowed students to upload media (usually videos) to the eStream catalogue (as private videos i.e. only they can see them) and they then add them to their Blackboard assignments using the MashUp tool. However, as you say this is only for videos and not for other large files. Steve - I'd be very interested to hear about the Helix Building Block which integrates with the Grade Centre once this is released. The Planet eStream one is virtually identical to the in-built Youtube Mash, and works very well, but any extra functionality around video submission would be very useful. I believe they are close to releasing a building block that would allow this and integrate with the Grade Centre. Users would add the video by using the Mash up function and tutors could reply with text comments, an attached file or another video as feedback. I'd be interested in finding out if anyone else is considering or has implemented a similar solution. Currently we support this using the Blackboard Content System by setting up folders in the Institution content area, manually setting permissions and then creating adaptively released links to these folders in our courses for either individual students or groups. As all the folder permissions need to be set manually this process is very time consuming and open to user error on our account. We do however find that taking this approach does allow students to upload files of 4GB+. There are of course problems caused by the fact that the upload is managed by the browser and so any connection interruptions mean that students need to start over and additionally, dependant on browser, students don't get any kind of indication for upload progress. The other feature missing from this approach is that we would also like an email receipt to be generated for the students. We have tried to use the Bb Assignment tool but found that the Java handler doesn't reliably handle any uploads over 500MB, we have raised this with Bb support but they have said that the java handler settings could be adjusted for larger file sizes but this could potentially cause the whole system to become unstable. I don't quite understand why the Content System can handle the uploads but not the Assignment tool but we can't take any risks as soon as stability is mentioned. Our current line of investigation is looking at the possibility of using a separate system to handle and store large uploads which would then be integrated with Bb via a Text Editor mashup, the assignment handling would then be safely delivered by the Bb Assignment tool. I would just like to know how others might be handling large file submissions and whether anyone might have done something similar with the mashup approach?
