Dear Colleagues,

At Anglia Ruskin, we have a long established regulation for requiring a ‘qualifying mark’ (sometimes referred to as a ‘threshold mark’) for individual elements of assessment within a module that has to be attained by students to pass a module which is in addition to an overall aggregate pass mark.

For example, a student with an aggregate module mark of 50% will fail a module if the achievement in the first of two elements (eg: an examination) is less than 30%, irrespective of how good performance was in the second element (eg: a piece of written coursework).

We are currently reviewing certain aspects of our assessment regulations and, to this end, I should like to know if other institutions have a similar qualifying mark regulation and, if so, the level at which the qualifying mark is set (eg:, 30, 35 or 40%).

Of course, I will collate and distribute the responses to ARC colleagues.

Thanks for your help – look forward to hearing from you!  Please reply to [log in to unmask].

As ever,

Paul.
