Caring and supporting people with dementia is now a major public health issue both for the UK and world-wide. Lack of diagnosis, however, remains a major problem: there are currently 670,000 people with dementia in England but nearly half remain undiagnosed and with no access to support. This seminar will explore some of the issues involved both in overcoming barriers to effective diagnosis and maintaining support within the home and community. The areas covered in the seminar will include: early identification of dementia in the signing Deaf community; evaluating home support for people with dementia and their carers; and raising awareness and challenging the stigma associated with dementia.
