COLLOQUIA
ON MATERIAL CULTURE & ANCIENT RELIGION
Urban Spaces of Early
Christianity: Ephesos, Pergamon, Aphrodisias,
and Southwest Asia
Minor
This year, the Colloquium on Material Culture and Ancient
Religion
will focus on urban centers in southwestern Turkey. COMCAR
2014
provides faculty with an in-depth look at some of the most
important
archaeological sites and museums in southwestern Asia
Minor.
Participants will visit sites with archaeologists who have
excavated
there, and interact with them about issues of interest to
the
colloquium. Participants will also present some of their own
research
to the colloquium in order to work on integrating the material
culture
into their research and
teaching.
Dates: July 11-24,
2014
Participation: limited to
12 faculty in Christian origins and
related
fields.
Registration fee: to
be determined. Approx. $3200-$3500.
Includes hotels, most
transportation in country, breakfasts, site
fees, opening and closing
banquets. Excludes airfare, lunches,
dinners, and some misc.
expenses.
Itinerary: Planned site visits include Ephesos,
Pergamon, Sardis,
Aphrodisias, Priene, Stratonikeia, Aspendos,
Hierapolis, Myra, Laodicea,
Smyrna, and others.

SBL International Meeting, Vienna (July 6-10,
2014). COMCAR will also
sponsor two events at the SBL International Meeting.
One session will
present recent research on Ephesos, and the other will be a
guided
tour of the Ephesos Museum in Vienna. Although the sessions at
the
International Meeting are designed to support the theme of this
year’s
COMCAR, the sessions will be open to anyone attending
the
International Meeting, and will not be restricted to
COMCAR
