Dear Jennifer,
Maybe a bit earlier that you are looking for, but one bone was identified by Bramwell in the Pictish material from Buckquoy (Mr G S Cowles of the Dept of Ornithology, BM, was also consulted in the identification of the osprey). See: Bramwell, D.'Bird and vole bones from Buckquoy, Orkney' In Ritchie, A. (ed.) Excavations of Pictish and Viking-age farmsteads at Buckquoy, Orkney. Proceeding of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland 108, 209-211.
Might be of some interest to you!
All the best

Subject: [ZOOARCH] ospreyDear all,
I had a query from a colleague about osprey, particularly in medieval contexts. I am not aware of much evidence from the UK and would therefore like to ask the wider zooarchaeological community for help. Has anyone ever found any osprey bones in archaeological assemblages? Or does anyone know of any depictions or references to osprey in medieval manuscripts?
Many thanks for any information,
With best wishes,
Jennifer
