Dear friends, Below find a link to photos of a worked bone from a prehistoric site in San Diego, CA (circa 3,000bp). The bone is a metatarsal shaft of a black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus). As you can see from the photos (click on photo to enlarge), a hole was carved near the distal end. Any thought on what was the use of this bone and the reason for the carved hole? Ideas I'm entertaining are: a) single-tone whistle; b) ornament https://www.dropbox.com/sc/uznj3lve9jn58z3/cpKstTAhdh Thanks much, Aaron P.S. Dear Eugene, Tibiotarsus of a blue-winged parakeet (Psittacula columboides) was recovered at the site mentioned above. It was recovered from level 10-20cm below surface and since we have strong evidence the upper levels were disturbed, I have no doubt it is intrusive. I hope that helps. ------------------------------------------------------- Aharon Sasson, PhD Co-director, San Diego Zooarchaeology Lab Department of Birds and Mammals San Diego Natural History Museum 1788 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101 Tel: 858 530 0062 SDZL Website: http://new.sdnhm.org/research/san-diego-zooarchaeology-lab P Please consider the impact on the environment before printing this message.
