Dear friends,
Below find a link to photos of a worked bone from a prehistoric site in San Diego, CA (circa 3,000bp). The bone is a metatarsal shaft of a black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus). As you can see from the photos (click on photo to enlarge), a hole was carved near the distal end. Any thought on what was the use of this bone and the reason for the carved hole? Ideas I'm entertaining are: a) single-tone whistle; b) ornament

Dear Eugene,
Tibiotarsus of a blue-winged parakeet (Psittacula columboides) was recovered at the site mentioned above. It was recovered from level 10-20cm below surface and since we have strong evidence the upper levels were disturbed, I have no doubt it is intrusive. I hope that helps.
