Hello,

There is another experimental centre in Denmark that has "aurochsen". They may be worth getting in touch with.

Hi- there is an experimental nature reserve north of Amsterdam that has reintroduced ‘wild horses’ ‘wild cattle’ (based on breed-back cf. Heck) and red deer. See http://wildexperiments.com/introduction/ or look up the Oostvaardersplassen.

They also have white tailed eagles there (impressively large- looked like vultures sitting there). Ironically, it is reclaimed land that was earmarked for development but planning delays saw it turned into a large nature reserve. I’m afraid I didn’t get any decent pictures when I visited (need a very good telephoto lens)

Best wishes

Sue

Hi everyone,

There was half an aurochs skeleton on display at Newport Museum when I visited, but that was a few years ago now.

Ooh and as mentioned before there is the depiction laid out in Boessneck which is depicted in Ekstrom, but also here:

There are also a couple of other depictions in this same paper which might be worth checking out.

Hi Jacqui,

A while ago I was contacted by an artist who was trying to reconstruct the aurochs and I gave him some advice and sent him some measurements. I think he did quite a good job, although I can't seem to find the image that he completed online anymore. His e-mail address is: [log in to unmask],'','','')" target=_blank>[log in to unmask] (his name is Tom Hammond). Apart from that the most plain one I have found is the one off this website: http://animalblawg.wordpress.com/2010/02/12/the-return-of-the-aurochs-along-with-some-baggage/

I don't know very much about the Heck brothers, but I know that there are currently a group based in the Netherlands who want to do a similar thing..

I'm not sure about articulated aurochs skeletons in your part of the world. There is one in the zoology museum in Cambridge but I think that's the only one I have seen in the UK. Have you checked with the Newport Museum that they don't have the famous 'Alice' skeleton on display? I haven't been there but I know its a fairly complete skeleton.

I'm really glad that you wrote that piece about Beasts of the Southern Wild. I really enjoyed the film but came away feeling a little frustrated because their aurochs was so unlike an aurochs! They even had it eating meat!

Hello, just a quick couple of questions

1. Does anyone know of any good accounts of the Heck Brothers work 'recreating' the aurochs in germany?

2. Where near to Cardiff/Bristol are any mounted aurochs skeletons?

3. Any good images of an aurochs, all I can find are either historic or mildly hysterical!

I visited Berlin zoo in the early 80s and saw some giant cattle (were they Heck brother aurochs) which made a great impression on me.  I recently wrote a brief piece on aurochs  for the film Beast of the Southern Wild. and as a result National Geographic have been in touch as they are interested in making a program on the Heck brothers.

Cheers for any information.
