The National Museum, situated in Bloemfontein, in the heart of the Free
State Province of South Africa, has a long and continuing research
tradition. The Florisbad Quaternary Research Department is dynamic,
innovative and productive in the field of Quaternary vertebrate
palaeontology and archaeozoology. The Department is proud of its substantial
research collections, which include modern comparative osteological
materials and fossil vertebrates, mainly from the interior of southern
Africa.

The current research interest of the department includes the evolution of
modern mammal faunas in southern Africa, the appearance of southern
endemism, and Early - Middle Pleistocene comparisons with East Africa.

The Department seeks a dedicated and motivated individual to become involved
on a long-term basis in the activities of the department, to ensure the
continuation of research productivity and the well-being of the research
collections.

Requirements

.         A doctorate in Quaternary Vertebrate Palaeontology, Archaeozoology
or Palaeoecology.

.         A proven, productive research publication record.

.         A National Research Foundation (NRF) rating will be a
recommendation.

.         An energetic, resourceful and flexible approach to research.

.         An ability to work well within a team.

.         A valid driver's licence.

Key Performance Areas

1.     Research: Undertake palaeoecological, ecological and ecomorphological
research, resulting in the publication of research articles in accredited
journals.  

2.     Research funding: Raising research funds for projects to be
undertaken on the above topics.

3.     Research collaboration: Maintaining existing and establishing new
collaborations with external national and international parties.

4.     Curation: Active involvement in the curation of osteological
collections of the department.

5.     Participation in departmental activities: Contribution to fieldwork,
the training and development of staff and to the public educational
activities of the department.
